Hubbert peak

The Hubbert Peak is named after the scientist M. King Hubbert, who realized that oil production from a certain area will follow a certain pattern over time. He figured out that oil production first goes up and then down again in a kind of bell shape. The highest point of the bell is called the Hubbert Peak - this is when oil production is at its highest and then begins to decline. The Hubbert Peak happens when the amount of oil in the ground runs out and it's not possible to get any more. It's like the peak of a mountain - once you've reached the top, you can't go any higher!
