ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Infectious disease

Hey kiddo, do you know what sickness is? It's when you feel really bad, and you have to stay in bed and take medicine. But do you know why you get sick? Sometimes it's because of tiny little things called germs that can make you sick.

Now, some germs are good for us. Like the good bacteria in our tummy that help us digest food. But there are some germs that are not good, and they can make you feel really sick. Those are called infectious diseases.

Infectious diseases are caused by tiny living things called pathogens. These are things like bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. They can get into your body and start causing trouble. They can make you feel very sick, and sometimes they can even be deadly.

Sometimes these germs can spread from person to person. For example, when someone sneezes or coughs, they might send tiny droplets into the air. If you breathe in those droplets, then you could catch the sickness too. This is how diseases like the flu spread around.

Other times, the germs that cause infectious diseases can be spread through things like contaminated water, or even by bugs like mosquitoes. When these germs get inside your body, they can start making you feel really bad.

So that's what infectious diseases are. They are caused by tiny germs that can make us very sick, and they can be spread from person to person, or by other means. It's important to wash your hands regularly, and to stay away from people who are sick. That way you can try to protect yourself from getting these diseases.
