Jeremiah was a man who spoke to God and told people what God wanted them to know. In Jeremiah 18, God tells Jeremiah to go to a potter's house. The potter is someone who makes things out of clay, like pots and bowls.
God tells Jeremiah to watch the potter as he makes something out of clay. First, the potter takes a lump of clay and puts it on his wheel. Then he spins the wheel and adds water so the clay becomes soft and easy to shape.
Next, the potter starts to shape the clay with his hands. He can make it into any shape he wants – round, tall, short, wide, or narrow. This is called molding the clay.
But sometimes, the clay doesn't come out the way the potter wants it to. Maybe it's too lumpy or the shape is uneven. Instead of giving up, the potter starts again. He takes the clay off the wheel and starts over, making a new lump and molding it into the shape he wants.
God tells Jeremiah that people are like clay, and God is like the potter. God wants to mold us into the best version of ourselves. But sometimes, we don't turn out the way God wants us to. We might make mistakes or choose to do things that hurt ourselves or others. But God doesn't give up on us. God always gives us another chance to turn things around and start over fresh.
So Jeremiah learns that just like the potter can shape and reshape the clay until it becomes a beautiful object, so can God shape and reshape us until we become the best version of ourselves.
