Kakure Kirishitan are people in Japan who practiced a secret form of Christianity. This secret practice was hidden because Christianity was outlawed in Japan in the 16th century, so Kakure Kirishitan had to practice their religion in secret. They would gather in caves and secret places to worship, because if they were caught practicing Christianity they could be punished. The Kakure Kirishitan also changed their names and their language so that no one would know that they were Christian. To this day, some Japanese people still practice the religion of Kakure Kirishitan and keep their faith hidden.
