ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Line of succession to the British throne

Okay kiddo, so the line of succession to the British throne tells us who will become the king or queen of England next. You know how you have a family tree? Well, it’s a bit like that, but just for the people who could be king or queen.

So, the person who is currently the king or queen of England is Queen Elizabeth II. But when she's not queen anymore, someone else has to take over - and that person is going to be one of her relatives. That's where the line of succession comes in.

The first in line is the queen's son, Prince Charles. If something were to happen to Queen Elizabeth, like if she passed away or retired, then Prince Charles would become king.

Then, after Prince Charles, the next person in line is his oldest son, Prince William. If something were to happen to Prince Charles, then Prince William would become king instead of his dad.

Now, if something were to happen to both Prince Charles and Prince William, the next in line is Prince William's oldest child, Prince George. He’s just a little boy right now, but he would become king if something happened to his dad and grandpa.

The line of succession goes on and on, all the way down the royal family tree. So, if something happens to all the people in front of a certain relative, then that relative would become king or queen.

That's the line of succession! It's like a list of who gets to be the king or queen next, and it goes down the family tree until it reaches someone who is still alive and can take over.
