Luminiferous aether

Luminiferous aether was an old idea that scientists used to think that all of space was filled with a special substance called aether. They believed that special aether filled all the spaces in between the stars and planets, and that light traveled through it like a wave through the ocean. It was thought that the aether was a sort of invisible wind that moved the stars and planets and made the universe work the way it did. In the end, scientists found out that the idea of aether was wrong, and that light travels through empty space.
