Hello there! Do you know what a beach is? It's a place by the ocean with a lot of sand and waves. Well, some of those beaches don't always look the same over time. Sometimes the water level of the ocean changes, and that can affect the shape of the beach.
Thousands of years ago, the ocean level used to be lower than it is today. That means that some of the beaches we have today didn't exist back then. Instead, the ocean level was lower and the land was exposed. But as the water level rose over time, that exposed land was covered by the ocean.
Now, here's where marine terraces come in. When that land was exposed, it wasn't just flat like a beach. It was rocky and had hills and valleys just like the land you see on land. When the ocean level rose, it ended up cutting into that rocky land and shaping it. It made a flat shelf-like area right above the current beach. We call that a marine terrace. It's like a step up or a shelf that's above the current beach.
So, imagine you're at the beach, and you see a step-like shelf that's a little higher than the sand you're standing on. That's a marine terrace! And it's there because the ocean level used to be lower a long time ago and the water had cut into the rocky land.
