ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Beach nourishment

Do you like going to the beach and playing in the sand? Well, sometimes beaches can lose their sand and become narrow and small. This can happen because of storms, high tides, and strong waves.

When this happens, beach nourishment comes into the picture! It’s like giving the beach a big, yummy sandwich that makes it healthy and happy again.

Beach nourishment means bringing sand from somewhere else and putting it on the beach so that it becomes wider and stronger. A big machine called a dredger is used to suck up sand from the ocean floor and bring it to the beach. Then, trucks take the sand to where it's needed on the beach.

Once the sand is on the beach, it's spread out and carefully shaped to make sure it's nice and even. When it's all done, the beach is wider and we can have more fun playing in the sand and swimming in the ocean!

So, next time you go to the beach, look carefully at the sand and see if it looks like it might have been given a big yummy sandwich to help it grow.
