Mormonism and slavery

Mormonism and slavery have an interesting history. In the early 1800s when Mormonism began, some church members kept slaves. But in 1848, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the official name for Mormons) declared that slavery was wrong and that all members should free any slaves they had. After that, Mormons were some of the first people in the United States to oppose slavery and support the freedom of all people.
