ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Origin of the Moon

The moon is a big ball that goes around the Earth. But do you know how it got there? Well, a very long time ago, there was a giant bump in space that was moving around the Sun. It was so big that it spun all by itself, just like a toy top.

One day, this giant bump was getting closer and closer to Earth. It was moving so fast that it crashed right into Earth! The crash was very loud and very hot, and it made the whole Earth shake. After the crash, some of the stuff from the Earth and the giant bump flew up into space. They started to spin around each other, and soon they stuck together to make the moon!

That's why the moon is round like a ball, just like the Earth. And it's also why the moon goes around the Earth. Scientists call this crash and the moon's creation "The Giant Impact Theory." Cool, huh?
