Panopticon

The panopticon is like a giant eye in a tower. It's a special kind of prison where all the prisoners can be watched at the same time by one guard in the tower. The prisoners don't know when they are being watched or not, so they have to behave all the time. It's like when your mom tells you to clean up your room, but she doesn't check if you did it or not, so you might not do it. But if she can see you all the time, you will clean your room so she doesn't get upset. The panopticon was designed so that prisoners could be controlled all the time, without the need for a lot of guards. It was a way to make prisons more efficient and less costly.
