ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Peripheral vision

Your eyes are like two little cameras that take pictures of everything you see. But not everything that you see is in focus like when you look straight at something. There are some things that you see out of the corner of your eye or when you look to the side without moving your head. This is called your peripheral vision.

Think of it like you are playing a hide and seek game with your friends. If you look straight at your friend who is hiding, you will see them clearly. But if you just glance in their direction without focusing on them, you might see something moving or notice a color that stands out. That's kind of how your peripheral vision works.

Your peripheral vision lets you see things that are not right in front of you. It helps you notice when someone is walking up to you from the side, or when a bird flies by really fast. It's not as clear as looking straight at something, and sometimes it's hard to tell exactly what you see, but it's still important for you to be able to see things all around you.

So, just remember that your eyes can see things both in front of you and all around you, and that's thanks to your peripheral vision!
