ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Privilege (social inequality)

Privilege is when some people are treated better or given more opportunities in life, just because of who they are or how they were born. Think of it like a game where some people start with more points or advantages than others, even though they didn't earn them.

For example, imagine two kids playing a video game. One kid has a brand new controller and has played the game before, while the other kid has an old, broken controller and has never played the game. The first kid has a privilege because they have a better chance of winning, even if they're not as skilled as the other kid.

In real life, this can happen based on a lot of things, such as race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, wealth, or education. Some people are born into families that have more money or connections, which can help them get ahead. Some people look a certain way and are treated better or worse because of it. Some people have access to better schools or healthcare, while others struggle to get by.

It's important to recognize what privilege is and how it affects people's lives. Just because someone has a privilege doesn't mean they didn't work hard, but it means they had some advantages that others didn't. It's also important to try and use your privilege to help make things more equal for everyone, instead of ignoring or denying it.
