ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Putrefying bacteria

Putrefying bacteria are tiny organisms that live all around us - in the soil, water, air, and even inside some animals. They are very small and cannot be seen without a microscope.

When something dies, these bacteria start to eat it away. This process is called decomposition and it happens to all living things eventually. Putrefying bacteria are a type of decomposer.

When putrefying bacteria eat away at something, they release gases and chemicals that make it smell bad. Have you ever smelled something really stinky, like rotten eggs or a dead animal? That's because putrefying bacteria are at work!

Sometimes, these bacteria can be harmful to humans and animals. For example, if you eat food that has been left out for too long, putrefying bacteria may have started to grow on it. If you eat that food, you may get sick because of the harmful bacteria.

It's important to be careful and clean, especially when handling things that could have putrefying bacteria on them. This way, we can prevent the spread of harmful bacteria and keep ourselves healthy!
