Pythagoreanism

Pythagoreanism is an ancient Greek philosophy named for the mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras. It was based on the belief that numbers and mathematics are the most important and powerful forces in the universe. Pythagoreans believed that the world and all things in it could be understood in terms of numbers, and that the key to understanding the universe was to discover the relationship between numbers and the physical world. They believed that numbers were the most fundamental building blocks of the universe and that their study could lead to profound truths about life. Pythagoreans also believed that music and mathematics were closely related, and that a certain harmony, or musica universalis, exists in the heavens and can be discovered in nature.
