Racial-ethnic socialization

Racial-ethnic socialization is when grown-ups like parents, teachers, and other big people teach kids about their race and their culture. It's about learning about where you come from, what you look like, and how people might treat you differently because of those things.

So, let's say you are a five-year-old who has brown skin and you go to school with a bunch of kids who have white skin. Your mom might teach you about how important it is to be proud of your skin color and your culture. She might talk to you about all the awesome people who have brown skin, and how beautiful your hair is. She might help you know what to do if someone makes fun of you because of your skin color.

Teachers might also talk to you about your culture and your background. They might teach you about the history of your people and the struggles they have faced. They might also encourage you to share your experiences with your classmates, so they can learn more about you.

Basically, racial-ethnic socialization is about helping kids of different races and cultures feel good about themselves and their heritage. It's about giving them the tools they need to navigate the world, which can be tough and confusing sometimes. But with the support of their families and their communities, they can learn to embrace who they are and be proud of their identities.
