Rent-seeking

Rent-seeking is a way of trying to get something (money or other kinds of benefits like power or fame) without doing any useful work or providing any value. It's like trying to get something for free without having to work for it. For example, two companies could be trying to get a government contract without providing the lowest price or the best services, but just by spending money on lobbying.
