ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Right of asylum

Imagine you and your friend are playing in the park, but suddenly you see a big, mean dog coming towards you. You get scared and run away, but your friend cannot run as fast as you and the dog catches up to them. Your friend is really scared and does not know what to do.

Now, imagine that your friend is from another country where there is a war going on. People are getting hurt and it is not safe for your friend anymore. Your friend decides to leave their home and travel to a different country to be safe.

When your friend arrives in this new country, they may have the right to something called asylum. Asylum means that the new country will protect and take care of your friend, and will not send them back to their dangerous home country.

Just like how you protect your friend from the mean dog, the new country is protecting your friend from the danger in their home country. Asylum is like a big, friendly hug that makes your friend feel safe and protected.
