ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Role theory

Role theory is the idea that people have different roles to play in society. Imagine you and your friends want to play pirates, and each of you takes on a different role: one of you is the captain, one is the lookout, one is the sailor, and so on. Each role has its own set of responsibilities, and together you all work to make the pirate game as fun as possible.

In real life, people also have different roles to play. For example, your parents might have the role of providing for the family, while your teacher has the role of educating you. Different jobs also have different roles, such as doctors who have the role of healing people, and police who have the role of protecting people.

In society, people often interact with each other based on their roles. For example, a student might interact differently with their teacher than with their friends, because the teacher has a different role to play. Role theory helps us understand how people behave in different situations, and how they interact with each other based on the roles they have.
