Root cellar

A root cellar is like a special cool room in a house where people can store fruits and vegetables to keep them fresh for a long time. It's like a fridge, but it doesn't need electricity, and it's built underground or in a cool basement.

When farmers harvest their crops, they store them in the root cellar to keep them fresh until they need to use them. The cool temperature in the root cellar helps slow down the ripening process, which means that fruits and vegetables can last for months instead of just a few days or weeks.

To make a root cellar, you need to find a place that is dry, cool, and well-ventilated. Sometimes people dig a hole or an underground room and cover it with a dirt roof, which keeps it insulated from the outside heat.

In a root cellar, people can store things like carrots, potatoes, apples, or onions – any veggie or fruit that needs a cool temperature for long storage. So, it's like having a fridge, but without the electricity bill and with the bonus of enjoying fresh, locally grown produce all year long.
