ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sensory processing

Sensory processing is about how your body uses your senses to understand the world around you. Your senses include things like touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing. When you touch something, for example, your body sends a message to your brain that says "Hey, that feels soft!" Your brain then processes that message and tells you what you're touching. People with sensory processing difficulties might have a harder time understanding sensations or might get overwhelmed by certain types of sensory input. They might feel uncomfortable with things that most people don't even notice, like the feel of certain fabrics or the sound of a clock ticking. Sometimes, people with sensory processing difficulties might need some extra help or support to feel more comfortable in their surroundings.
