Serfdom was a system in olden times where some people did not have as much freedom as others. The people who did not have freedom were called serfs, and they were owned by the people with more freedom, called Lords or rulers. The serfs had to do what the Lords said, and they had to give the Lords part of their money or crops. The serfs did not get to move away from the land they lived on, so they stayed there for their whole lives.
