Have you ever noticed that when you stand in front of a bright light, you have a dark figure shaped like you that appears on the ground or wall behind you? That's your "shadow"! Shadows are made when an object blocks light from a source, making a dark shape on the surface it's being projected on.
Let's say you have a flashlight and you point it towards a wall. If you hold an object in front of the light, it will cast a shadow on the wall opposite to the light source. The shadow will look like the shape of the object you hold up!
The size of the shadow depends on how far away the object is from the light and how close it is to the surface the shadow is being cast on. For example, if you move your object closer to the wall while keeping the distance between the light and the object the same, the shadow will appear larger on the wall because it will be closer to the surface where the shadow is shown.
Shadows are all around us! They happen when the sun sets, and the light from the sun is not directly shining on everything anymore. Shadows change throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky- have fun trying to catch your own shadow and watching it move along with you throughout the day!
