ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Subcooling

Subcooling is like when you have a glass of water that is really cold and has ice cubes floating in it. The water in the glass is colder than it should be because it has something in it that is making it colder (the ice cubes).

Now, imagine that the water is like the liquid in an air conditioner or refrigerator, and the ice cubes are like a compressor that is cooling the liquid. The liquid in the air conditioner or refrigerator is called refrigerant, and it gets really cold when the compressor cools it down.

Subcooling is when the refrigerant gets even colder than it should be before it goes into the part of the air conditioner or refrigerator that cools the air or the food. This happens when the liquid refrigerant is cooled even more after it leaves the compressor, like when it goes through a special coil or pipe that makes it really cold.

So, subcooling makes the refrigerant even colder so that the air conditioner or refrigerator can cool things down better. It's like putting more ice cubes in your glass of water to make it even colder.
