Hello kiddo!
Have you ever been outside in the sun for a long time and your skin turned red and hurt? That's called sunburn.
Let's talk about how it happens. The sun gives off something called ultraviolet (UV) rays, which are like invisible beams of light that can't be seen or felt.
When these UV rays go into our skin, they can harm our body's little helpers called cells. Our cells work really hard to protect our whole body, but when they get hurt by the UV rays, they can't work as well.
To protect themselves, our cells make something called melanin, which is a brown pigment that makes our skin darker. This is what gives you a tan. But sometimes, our cells can't make enough melanin fast enough, and that's when our skin turns red and hurts.
That's why it's important to wear sunscreen when we go outside. Sunscreen is like a lotion that we put on our skin to help block the UV rays so our skin doesn't get hurt.
So remember, use sunscreen and avoid being in the sun for too long to avoid getting sunburned!
