ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Tether satellite

So, imagine you are playing with a toy car and you attach a long string to it. The string keeps the car from going too far and also lets you control where it goes. This is kind of like a tether satellite!

A tether satellite is a really long rope or cable that is connected to a satellite and anchored to the Earth. The satellite orbits around the Earth, and the rope or cable stretches out behind it. The idea is that the rope or cable can be used to create tension and control the satellite’s position and movement.

This can be helpful for a few different reasons. For example, if we want to move a satellite from one orbit to another, we can use a tether satellite to pull it or push it in the right direction. We can also use a tether satellite to generate electricity by moving it through Earth’s magnetic field. And finally, we can use a tether satellite to clean up space junk by capturing it with the rope or cable.

Overall, a tether satellite is a really cool way to help us use and explore space in new and creative ways!
