ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Vacuous truth

Dear little one, have you ever heard of the words ‘vacuous truth’?
Well, let me tell you what it means in a very simple and easy way.

Vacuous truth is when a statement is true, but it doesn't say anything about the reality of the situation.

Let me explain it with an example:

Suppose you and I are looking at a field with no animals in it, and I say to you, "All the cows in this field are spotted."

Now, we both know there are no cows in the field. So, even though what I said was technically true, it doesn't say anything about the reality of the situation. It's just a meaningless statement.

Another example could be – if I say “All the boys in this room have long hair” when none of the boys in the room have long hair. Again, it’s true in a sense, but it doesn’t tell us anything meaningful about reality.

So, that’s what vacuous truth is – when a statement is true, but it’s meaningless because it doesn’t describe anything that is real.

I hope you understood it. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me!
