ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Vernacular

Well hi there, little one! Have you ever heard someone speak in a way that sounds different than the way you talk at home? Maybe you’ve heard someone say “y’all” instead of “you all” or “gonna” instead of “going to”. That different way of speaking is called vernacular!

Vernacular is just a fancy word for the way people talk in their day-to-day lives. It’s basically the language that’s used by everyday people in a particular region or community. The vernacular can include the words people use, the grammar they use, and the expressions they use. It’s different from “standard” language (like what you might learn in school) because it’s not as formal and it can vary from place to place.

For example, in the southern United States, people might use the word “y’all” instead of “you all”. This is part of their vernacular. And in the British Isles, people might say “he was chuffed” to mean he was pleased, which is another part of their vernacular.

So, basically, vernacular is just the way people talk in different parts of the world, and it’s what makes languages so interesting and diverse!
