ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Weasel word

A weasel word is a sneaky way that people use words to make things sound better or different than they really are. It's like when mommy says we can have a tiny piece of candy, but that tiny piece is actually very small and not enough to satisfy us.

Politicians, advertisers, and other people who want to persuade us to believe something or buy something, often use weasel words to make what they are saying sound more appealing. They can make promises that sound good but are vague, or use words that are confusing so we don't really understand what they are saying.

For example, someone might say "this product is scientifically proven to work," but they don't tell us what kind of study was done or who did it, so we don't really know if it's true or not.

It's important to be careful when we hear weasel words because they can be used to trick us into thinking or doing something that we might not want to do.
