ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Yangban

A yangban was a special kind of person in old Korea. They were kind of like nobles or lords. The yangban were very rich and powerful, and they were also very educated. They knew a lot of things about literature, music, and art.

The yangban were very important because they helped run the government. They made big decisions about how to make the country better. They were like big bosses and they were respected by everyone in Korean society.

The yangban were also very proud of their family and their ancestors. They thought that their family was the best one, and they wanted to keep it that way. They didn't usually mix with other people who weren't yangban.

But not everyone was happy with the yangban. Some people thought that the yangban were too powerful and that they didn't care about the poor people in Korea. Over time, many people started to want to change things in the country, and eventually, the yangban lost their power.

So it's kind of like the yangban were the big boss people in Korea a long time ago, because they were rich, powerful, and educated. But they also had some problems, because they didn't always treat everyone fairly.
