Judenrat

Okay, so a long time ago during a really bad time called the Holocaust, some really mean people called the Nazis were in charge and they wanted to hurt and kill Jewish people.

Sometimes, they would pick one or a few Jewish people to be in charge of other Jewish people in their community. These people were called Judenrat, which means "Jewish Council" in German.

The Nazis picked these Judenrat leaders because they thought it would make it easier for them to control the Jewish people in that area. But unfortunately, the Judenrat leaders weren't really in charge in a nice way – they were forced to do things for the Nazis that hurt their own people.

They had to help the Nazis round up Jewish people and send them to concentration camps where they were treated very cruelly. The Judenrat leaders had to make lists of people to send away and they had to make sure everyone followed the rules the Nazis set.

It was a really hard and sad time for everyone involved, especially the Jewish people who were suffering so much because of the Nazis' actions.
