ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Countertransference

Countertransference is when a therapist has their own feelings or reactions that get in the way of helping their patient. For example, if a patient reminds the therapist of someone they don't like, the therapist might not be as nice to the patient as they should be. Or if a patient is very sad, the therapist might start to feel sad too and not be able to help the patient feel better. This is why therapists have to be very careful and aware of their feelings so they can help their patients the best they can.
