ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

English nationalism

"English nationalism" means that some people in England feel very proud and loyal to their country, just like when you feel proud and happy about being part of your family, or friends. They believe in the importance of England as a nation and want to show their love and respect for it.

Nationalism is all about feeling like you belong to a certain group or country and sharing the same beliefs, values, and customs as other people who live there. People who are English nationalists think that their country is special, and they are proud of British culture, traditions, and achievements.

English nationalists believe in preserving and promoting the English culture, language, and heritage. They want to celebrate the country's history, landmarks, and symbols like the flag, the queen, and St George's Day. They also like to watch English sports, such as football, cricket, and rugby, and take part in national events like the trooping of the color, the Remembrance Day, or the Easter parade.

However, it's important to know that not all English people are English nationalists, and not all English nationalists share the same political views or ideas. Some people use nationalism to promote intolerance, division, and discrimination against people who are not English, or who don't share the same values, religion, or ethnicity. This can create hatred, tension, and conflicts between different groups and harm the feeling of unity and belonging that nationalism is supposed to nurture.

So, being proud of your country and culture is a good thing, but we should also respect and appreciate the diversity of people, cultures, and languages around us, and strive for inclusiveness, understanding, and compassion to make the world a better place for everyone.
