ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Federal state

Okay kiddo, so you know how we live in a big country called the United States? Well, that country is made up of smaller parts called states. A state is kind of like a big family with lots of people who live together in one area, and they all have to follow the same rules and laws to keep everything fair and safe.

Now, even though each state is its own family with its own set of rules and leaders, they still have to work together with the other states to make sure everything runs smoothly in the whole country. That's where the "federal" part comes in.

"Federal" just means that there's a group of leaders who are in charge of the whole country, and they make sure that all of the states are following the same basic rules and laws. They also make decisions that affect the whole country, like deciding which things are okay to sell or making rules about how people can travel between states.

So basically, a federal state is when a bunch of little groups (the states) come together under a big group (the federal government) to work together and make sure everyone is happy and safe. Does that make sense, kiddo?
