ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Gravitational constant

Okay kiddo, have you ever jumped on a trampoline and felt yourself come back down to earth? That happens because of something called gravity. Gravity is a force that pulls things towards each other.

Scientists have noticed that this force of gravity is always the same no matter where you are in the universe. So they made a number, called the gravitational constant, to help them calculate how strong this force is.

It's like if you wanted to figure out how much pressure to put on a balloon to make it pop. You might use a number to help you calculate the exact amount of pressure needed. The gravitational constant is like that number, but for gravity.

But, here's the tricky part. Even though scientists know what the gravitational constant is, they don't really know why it's that number. It's just something they accept as a fact of how the universe works.

So, in summary, the gravitational constant is a number that helps scientists understand the force of gravity, but they don't know exactly why it's that number.
