The Hawthorne Effect is the idea that people’s productivity is affected by their awareness of being observed. It is named after an experiment the Hawthorne Works factory near Chicago. The scientists working there wanted to measure how changes in workers' surroundings like light and temperature would affect their productivity. They found that it didn't matter how much they changed the environment - as soon as the workers realized they were being watched, their productivity improved. This suggests that productivity is linked to feeling like someone is taking an interest in you and your work.
