ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Institutional racism

Institutional racism is when a group of people are treated unfairly by an organization, institution, or policy because of their skin color or race. This can happen in things like education, employment, housing, public services, and the criminal justice system. It is different from individual racism because it is not about how one person treats another, but rather how a group is treated by a system. For example, it could be that a school consistently fails to invest in a certain minority group, or a company has a policy that puts certain people at a disadvantage. Even though no one person may be trying to be unfair, the impact of institutional racism can be just as serious, if not more so.
