Mortar (masonry)

Mortar is like glue for bricks and stones when building walls or other structures. Just like you use glue to stick paper or other things together, builders use mortar to stick bricks and stones together.

Mortar is made of three main things: cement, sand, and water. Cement is like the superhero in this story – it is the main ingredient that makes the mortar stick really well. Sand helps to fill in the spaces between the bricks or stones so that everything stays in place.

To make mortar, a builder mixes together the cement and sand, and then adds water until it feels like thick paste. This paste is then spread onto the bricks or stones using a special tool called a trowel. Once the mortar is in place, it needs time to dry and become hard.

Mortar is important because it keeps everything together and makes a strong structure. Think about a house: if the mortar was not there, the bricks and stones would fall apart and the house would not be safe or stable. So, mortar is a really important part of building and construction!
