ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pragmatic language impairment

Okay kiddo, so you know how we use words to communicate with each other? Well, some kids and grown-ups might have trouble using words in the right way, and we call that "pragmatic language impairment".

This means they might have a hard time understanding social cues, like facial expressions or body language, and might not know how to talk in different situations. For example, they might not realize it's not polite to interrupt someone when they're talking or might struggle to start a conversation with someone new.

It doesn't mean these people aren't smart or can't understand what others are saying - it just means they might need some extra help learning how to use words to communicate in the right way. They might work with a speech-language therapist or have special classes to help them learn these skills.

It's important to remember that everyone communicates differently, and that's okay! We just want to make sure everyone can understand each other and feel included in conversations.
