ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Rosy retrospection

Hey buddy! Do you remember the time we went to the park and played on the swings? Wasn't that so much fun? Well, have you noticed that sometimes when we remember things from the past, they seem even better than they actually were?

This is what we call "rosy retrospection". It's like a little trick our brain plays on us. When we remember something that happened in the past, our brain tends to focus on the good things and forget about the not-so-good things. It's like a pair of rose-colored glasses that make everything look better than it really was.

So, let's say we went to the park on another day and it started raining. We didn't have as much fun because we couldn't play on the swings or slide. When we remember that day later on, our brain might only remember the fun parts and forget that it rained and ruined our playground time.

It's not a bad thing that our brain does this. It helps us feel good about our memories and makes us more likely to want to do those things again. But we should also try to remember the not-so-good things, so we can learn from them and make better choices in the future.

Does that make sense, buddy?
