Sanhedrin

The Sanhedrin was a group of important people in ancient Jewish society who helped make important decisions that affected the community, kind of like a group of wise and fair elders or judges. These people were highly knowledgeable and respected leaders who were responsible for making sure that Jewish laws were being followed and upheld.

The leader of the Sanhedrin, known as the High Priest, was responsible for leading religious ceremonies and making sure that the Temple in Jerusalem was looked after. They also worked very hard to keep the community safe and ordered. When someone broke the law, the Sanhedrin would gather together to determine whether they deserved punishment, and if so, what kind of punishment they should receive.

The Sanhedrin played an important role in Jewish life for many centuries before, sadly, they were disbanded when the Roman Empire conquered and took over Jerusalem. But they are still remembered and respected as a symbol of the wisdom and guidance that can come from communal leadership.
