Surrogacy

Surrogacy is when a woman carries a baby in her belly for another person or couple who cannot have a baby on their own. It's like being a baby-sitter but instead of taking care of the baby after it is born, the woman grows the baby inside of her own belly until it's ready to be born.

Sometimes people want to have babies but they can't because the woman cannot carry the baby in her own belly. This can happen for many reasons like the woman not having a womb, having a medical condition that makes it unsafe for her to carry a baby or for same-sex couples who cannot have a baby together naturally. In these cases, a different woman called a surrogate helps them have a baby.

First, the couple or person who wants a baby finds a surrogate. They talk to her about what they want and agree on the rules and the amount of money that they will pay her for carrying their baby. The surrogate agrees to give up the child to them after it is born.

Then, doctors take an egg from the mother-to-be or donor and fertilize it with sperm from the father-to-be or donor. The fertilized egg is then placed inside the surrogate's belly where it will grow into a baby for about nine months. The surrogate gets to take care of herself by eating healthy food, going to doctor appointments, and not doing anything that could harm the baby.

When the baby is born, the surrogate gives the baby to the parents or parent who wanted the baby. Sometimes, the surrogate will visit the baby and the parents after the baby is born. This process can make a lot of people very happy because it helps them have a baby even if they couldn't on their own.
