ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Technical standard

A technical standard is like a set of rules that everyone has to follow when making things. Just like how we have to follow rules like "look both ways before crossing the street" or "brush your teeth twice a day," making things like computers, phones, or even toys also have rules to follow.

These rules make sure that all the different things that people make work well with each other. For example, if you want to charge your phone, you can use any charger that follows the same technical standard as your phone. This makes it easier for everyone to use their devices without having to worry about whether or not they have the right equipment.

Technical standards are usually created by a group of experts who all agree on the same set of rules. They work together to decide on what the rules should be and make sure that everyone follows them.

So just like how we all have to follow rules in our everyday lives, technical standards make sure that things we use are all on the same page and work well together.
