ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Artificial reef

An artificial reef is like a playground, but in the ocean instead of on land. It is a place where fish, plants, and other sea creatures can live and grow. It is created by people to make up for the natural reefs that have been destroyed or damaged by a big storm or human activity.

Just like how we make playgrounds with slides and swings, people make artificial reefs by placing different objects in the ocean. For example, they might put old boats, cars, or even statues down there! These objects provide a place for small fish to hide and grow. When the small fish grow up and become big, they attract bigger fish to the area.

When there are more fish in an area, it creates a healthier ecosystem. Overtime, coral will grow on the objects placed there, making it even more of a natural habitat.

People can also make artificial reefs by placing man-made structures designed specifically to create habitats for marine life, like concrete blocks or modules with holes for fish to burrow in. Some artificial reefs are also designed to provide a place for scuba divers to explore and enjoy the underwater world.

Overall, artificial reefs help to create a healthier ocean ecosystem and provide a fun place for fish and humans alike to play and explore.
