ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Buddhism

Buddhism is a philosophy, or way of thinking and living, that started in India around 2500 years ago. It is based on the teachings of the Buddha, which is another word for an enlightened or wise person. These teachings tell us that suffering (unhappiness) is only temporary, and that if we follow the path of the Buddha, it is possible for us to find true, lasting happiness for ourselves and for others. In Buddhism, we learn how to do this by understanding the nature of reality, living in the present moment, being kind and compassionate to others, and cultivating mindfulness and meditation. By practicing these things, we can reach a state of enlightenment and become like the Buddha, who is a perfect example of peace, joy, and wisdom.
