History of Estonia

Estonia is a small country in Europe, near Finland and Russia. It has been around for a long time, since the 1200s. Throughout history it has been part of different countries such as Sweden, Denmark, and Russia. After World War I, Estonia won its independence. For almost 50 years Estonia was a free country, until it was taken over by the Soviet Union in 1940. Estonia stayed in the Soviet Union until 1991, when it again won its independence. This means that for 30 years Estonia was a part of the Soviet Union, but now it is independent again. Estonia is now a free country and a member of the European Union since 2004.
