ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Legal status of same-sex marriage

Okay kiddo, so you know how some people fall in love with someone who is the same gender as them, right? Well, in some places, it used to be against the law for those people to get married and make a lifelong commitment to each other. That means they couldn't have a wedding and officially become a family in the eyes of the law.

But over time, people realized that love is love, no matter what gender you are, and that everyone should have the same rights and protections under the law. So some places started making it legal for same-sex couples to get married.

However, not every place has made this change yet, and some people still don't agree with same-sex marriage. So even though it's legal in some places, there are still debates and disagreements about it in other places. But the important thing is that everyone deserves to love who they want and have the same chances for a happy future.
