ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ship design

Think about a ship like a big bathtub that floats on water. Just like how you might play with your toys in the bath, people use ships for lots of different things like carrying cargo or taking people on vacation. But building a ship is really complicated because it has to be able to float and move through the water without tipping over.

When people design a ship, they have to think about lots of different things to make sure it will work properly. They start by deciding what the ship will be used for - will it carry people or things? Will it travel in rough seas or calm water? These things will affect how the ship is designed.

Next, they think about the shape of the ship. It's kind of like making a big, metal puzzle. They have to decide how to fit all the different pieces together so that the ship will be strong and balanced. They use special software programs to help them with this.

They also have to decide where to put everything on the ship - the engines, the steering controls, the living quarters for the crew, and so on. They want to make sure that the ship is comfortable for the people who will be on it, but also that it won't be too heavy and sink.

Finally, they test the ship to make sure it works like it's supposed to. They might use a model of the ship or computer simulations to see how it will move through the water. They might also build a small version of the ship and test it in a swimming pool or a tank of water.

Once everything is perfect, they build the ship for real, and it sets sail on its first journey.
