ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Typewriter

A typewriter is a machine that helps you write words on paper before computers were invented. It's like a keyboard that you can touch and press the keys to type, but instead of letters showing up on a screen like on a computer, you see them on paper. You put a piece of paper in the typewriter and then press the keys, which have little stamps on them that leave an impression on the paper. You have to press pretty hard because the machine needs to make sure the ink from the ribbon, which is like a long piece of string with ink on it, is transferred onto the paper. When you're finished typing a line, you have to use a handle or a lever to move the paper up to start typing the next line. Typewriters used to be very popular before computers were invented, but now we usually use computers instead.
