ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Stuttering

Stuttering is when someone has a hard time speaking because words get stuck in their mouth. Sometimes they might say parts of words over and over again, like "b-b-b-ball." It's like their mouth can't keep up with what their brain wants to say.

Stuttering is not anyone's fault, and it's not because someone is dumb or not trying hard enough. It's something that happens to some people, just like some people have trouble seeing or hearing.

People who stutter might feel frustrated or ashamed, but it's important to know that it's okay and there are many ways to help them. Sometimes a speech therapist can help, or they might practice speaking slowly and calmly.

The most important thing is to be patient and kind. If someone stutters, it's helpful to give them time to finish speaking without interrupting or finishing their sentences for them. With practice and support, many people who stutter can learn to speak more smoothly and confidently.
